The only song I felt was somewhat interesting at the time was the last song titled "Surrounded by Light". I and many others were expecting a lot more from Tiesto. Other songs I thought were okay (like "Escape Me") weren't pushing the envelop of EDM. "Louder Than Boom", "LA Ride", "Fresh Fruit", and many other songs on "Kaleidoscope" sound nothing like his previous body of work. Gone were the long melodic build-ups, replaced by much harsher/harder sounds that sometimes change abruptly. You can hear Tiesto pivoting hard toward the pop-EDM, electro house, and dubstep (for context, Skrillex was just about to blow up). I was soooo eager to listen it at the time, and was soooo disappointed by the entire album. In 2009, Tiesto released his next album titled "Kaleidoscope" (the link just takes you to a preview of the songs, but you can find each individual song on YouTube if you are interested). However, I cannot imagine hearing a song like that at a typical festival nowadays. A perfect song for driving, running, or just sitting at home with your eyes closed. "Bright Morningstar" is my favorite song from the album - four minutes of a steady driving melody, followed by a beautiful breakdown, capped off by elements of both phases of the song merged together. The album opens with "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise" which evokes images of a world slowly waking up. The last album of trancey-Tiesto was "Elements of Life", which was released in 2007. It was a Tiesto that was pushing the genre forward and adding new, beautiful, melodic music to the world. This was the Tiesto that the trance world loved.
TIESTO NYANA YOUTUBE MOVIE
You might recognize Barber's song from the iconic scene in the movie "Platoon" (warning, NSFW). His 2004 song "Adagio for Strings" was an electronic music take on Samuel Barber's highly emotional song by the same name. Back then he was purely techno and trance, as reflected in his early hits such as "Lethal Industry" (2001), "Flight 643" (2001), and "Nyana" (2003). Tiesto rose to fame in the late 1990s to early 2000s.

This week I will write about the moment he went from God-like status to a joke in the trance world, and share the album just before that moment occurred. I also mentioned how this transition was epitomized by Tiesto. Last week I discussed how the rise of pop-EDM (and other genres such as electro-house, dubstep, trap, etc.) coupled with an expansion of enormous festivals in the late 2000s and early 2010s, completely changed the world of electronic music.
